American Bank $1

American Bank Providence

1830s-40s Proof. Durand 907, Haxby RI-240 G4

“Imprint of C. Toppan & Co. N. York & Philad. India paper mounted on original archive book card. Top center, seated female with scale on table holding compass and book. Ornate end panels, 1s in corners. An elaborate Toppan type clearly in their distinctive Philadelphia style. One of two examples sold in lot 1818 from the 1990 ABN sale and very choice. A few are known (the Haxby Plate from the full denomination set on India paper sold in the Western Reserve Auction in 1996). The finest known or tied for it with the ‘A’ plate from this former ABN sheet.”
