November 18, 1853. Durand 1635, Haxby RI-355 A30, Bowers W-RI-1080-001.25-A070

Altered note from a $1.25 bill from the Roxbury Bank, Roxbury, Massachusetts.

This was a popular note among counterfeiters, who manipulated examples to look as if they were from numerous Rhode Island banks, including Providence’s City Bank, Weybosset Bank and Mechanics and Manufacturers Bank, as well as the Smithfield Bank.
