Mechanics & Manufacturers Bank $1

Nov. 2, 1853. Durand 1588, Haxby UNL, Bowers W-RI-1060-001-G020

Serial #89. Signatures of James H. Read, president, and Albert G. Stillwell, cashier. Handwritten date unclear, though based on the names of the president and cashier, most likely 1853.

Allegorical representations of Agriculture and Commerce appear at center, Ceres at right end and an unidentified maiden on the left reading a book placed on an ornate stand made to look like a “1.”

Similar to Haxby RI-345 G4, which is listed as SENC, though that note is identified as being from the New England Banknote Co. This piece bears the Toppan, Carpenter & Co. imprint.
